14 tips for problem-free storage

  1. Place belongings you use frequently or need quickly near the door.

  2. Make an inventory of your stored belongings and keep it in a safe place.

  3. Empty the gas reservoirs of lawnmowers, snowblowers, etc. This is vital. Storing combustible materials such as solvents, gas, paint, etc. is STRICTLY FORBIDDEN!

  4. Use boxes of the same size to make stacking easier. Place heavy boxes on the bottom and light ones on top.

  5. To save space, we recommend disassembling tables.

  6. Place mirrors and fragile items at the front of your storage unit.

  7. If possible, place sofas upright to save space.

  8. If mattresses are stored upright, keep them straight to avoid bending and damage.

  9. Keep tools for assembling and disassembling furniture close at hand.

  10. Check with your insurance company to see whether your policy is transferable. Entreposage Domestik can provide on-the-spot, full, low-cost coverage.

  11. Never store boxes, mattresses, or other items directly on concrete. Place them on matting or boards. Don't lean objects against the walls.

  12. Fragile objects must be placed in sturdy boxes and suitably wrapped with appropriate materials. The boxes must be marked "fragile" and stacked on the top of the pile, not the bottom.
  13. Do not store flammable products, perishable goods, live animals, food, or jewelry in your unit. The reservoirs of gas-powered motors must be completely emptied prior to storage.
  14. Keep a list of stored items. In case of damage or loss, this will speed up settlement of your claim.

Moving requires planning!

  • Use boxes of the same size. Fill them completely without overloading.
  • Boxes and Other Containers:

Make a list of the contents of each box and container.

Number the boxes.

Indicate the room where each box must be placed (living room, kitchen, etc.).

  • Prepare an inventory of the number of boxes and their contents for future reference.
  • Close the boxes and seal with packing tape.
  • Wrap dishes and fragile items in newspaper and place them in sturdy boxes. Note, however, that ink can rub off regular newspaper, making it necessary to clean your dishes, etc. You may purchase unprinted packing paper as well as other practical accessories from Entreposage Domestik. (More Info)
  • Don't place fragile objects in the same box as heavy items.
  • Cover mirrors, and other large fragile items with corrugated cardboard and write FRAGILE on the outside.
  • Leave your clothing in the drawer of your dresser. For clothing on hangers, we recommend using a wardrobe box.

The Moving Company

  • Ask the moving company to confirm in writing the cost of the services you have agreed to as well as the date and time of the move. Confirming the date and time is very important, especially in peak moving seasons.
  • Don't be afraid to ask whether they are insured against damage and losses that might occur during the move.
  • Ask them to explain their in-transit insurance. When in doubt, check with their insurance company.
  • Remember that the mover's responsibility is generally limited to a maximum amount per kilogram or pound.
  • If you think the maximum is insufficient, the mover can offer extra insurance coverage for an additional amount. Don't simply agree when they say "yes, we're insured"-ask for details.
